Born on the 7th of February, 1964, Mrs. Sibani Baruah Phukan grew up in a family rich with musical talent. Her father, Late Mr. Munin Baruah was a creative music influencer in his time.  He used to work at Assam Agricultural University as Information and Public Relation Officer.

BACKGROUND:

 Late Mr. Baruah was an expert in both vocal and dance. He wrote and directed multiple dance dramas like Sakuntala, Uxa Porinoi, Kopili Paror Bali Sapori, etc., which were extremely popular during the times when they were written.  He was a stern follower of music who had also performed in front of the former president of India, Mr. Sarvapelli Radhakrishnan.  Some of his famous students are Mr. Jatindra Nath Goswami, who is also a winner of Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Sarodi Saikia, Pushoa Bhuyan, Baba Goswami and many more.

Mrs. Sibani Baruah Phukan’s mother Mrs. Indira Baruah was the lead actress of the movie Tezimola. She also played a major role in the movie Hriday Kopua Gaan. She was also involved in the dance dramas Sakuntala, Uxa Porinoi, Kopili Paror Bali Sapori, etc that were written by Late Mr. Munin Baruah.

EDUCATION:

Mrs. Phukan completed her graduation from Dibrugarh University in the year 1980 with Assamese as an honours subject. Later on, she decided to continue her studies and completed her post graduation in the year 2009.

Mrs. Baruah Phukan completed her training in Hindustani Classical Music from Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith, Lucknow in the year 1987.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

Mrs. Baruah Phukan has many accolades and achievements to her credit. She has performed for the former governor of Assam Mr. V.P. Singh during his visit to Jorhat in the year 1987. She was recognized as a Modern Song Artist by All India Radio in the year 1983. On September, 23, 1996, she was upgraded to B- High Artist of Modern Song at All India Studio, Dibrugarh, with reference to her recordings of Adhuneek Geet.

In the year 1999, on 2nd February, she also performed dignified Bargeet and other musical performances in the presence of then Vice President of India, Sri. Krishan Kant, at Jorhat.

She also participated in the Millennium State Camp held at Sreemanta Kalakshetra Guwahati from June 18, 2001 to June 27, 2001. She has represented Assam at Mehsana Gujrat as a group leader and delivered an enthralling performance. She was also inducted into the hall of fame by Jorhat District Administration for her outstanding contributions to society in the field of music. She was honoured with a solo performance in the presence of former Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh in 2013. Her institute MBMMC has been representing Assam in National Youth Festivals since 2012 and has bagged many prizes and special achievements. 

Mrs.  Sibani Baruah Phukan mentions that she was always supported and encouraged by her parents in all the endeavours that she made towards making music her profession. She used to sing at functions and events from a very young age and she was always accompanied by her father Late Mr. Phukan.
